Summer Wellnes

Summer in Ayurvedic languaging is Pitta time, a time of fiery energy. We are fueled by the sun, but often need to temper this energy a bit to stay in optimal health and balance.

Fiery energy rules the summer season. Fire is balanced with a little bit of water. Cultivating a watery nature during the summer months can allow for more easy and flow even while feeling more productive and while playing exuberantly. The properties of fire are:

Hot, Light, Intense, Penetrating, Pungent, Sharp and Acidic

As with any elemental nature, there are great benefits that come with the properties. Sharp mind, strong intellect, robust energy, strong digestion are a few.

But, as with all states of energy, out of balance fire/pitta energy can result in inflammation of the joints and skin and eyes, anger, irritability, burning out, acid reflux, loose stools, impatience and excessive perfectionism.

To bring balance to the fire element, it is wise to engage in activities and eat foods that bring in the opposite energies:

Cool, Surrendered, Moderation
Sweet, Bitter, Astringent

Some useful tips for balancing this pitta energy and staying in balance while fully enjoying the summer energy are below. If you notice that your body, mind or spirit become particularly aggravated during the season of fire, working with a provider who can help guide you in balancing habits would be wise.

  1. Drink plenty of water. About 1/2 your body weight in oz is a good rule of thumb. Adding cucumber or mint can provide more cooling energy.

  2. Cooling foods. For a list of pitta balancing, cooling foods, visit our website/handouts page.

  3. Cultivating an attitude of surrender versus control.

  4. Regular routine.

  5. Avoiding intense exercise during the hottest part of the day.

  6. Soothing sound, scenery and company.

  7. Time for quiet and stillness.

  8. Laugh much and often.

  9. Cooling scents in a diffuser: Sandalwood, rose, jasmine, mint, lavender, fennel, and chamomile.

Happy Summer!
